Untethering the world's most popular peripheral connectivity standard, Belkin's CableFree USB Hub will offer four ports to eradicate cable carnage and let PC users roam free.
Accessory maker Belkin has delivered its first bid in the war for the wireless USB market with the CableFree USB Hub, a four-port hub which aims to eradicate the need to snake a multitude of cables between PCs and their peripherals. As the first device to rely on Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology in the US, Belkin said its hub will be compatible with existing USB devices and merely removes the need for wired connections whilst maintaining full interoperability.
Slated for availability in the early spring of 2006, the UWB technology upon which the CableFree USB Hub is based claims transfer rates up to 100 times faster than existing Bluetooth solutions, although the company did not comment on whether its solution will be competitive in terms of range.
Belkin did not provide any information concerning the expected pricing of the CableFree USB Hub, nor did it comment on additional requirements to enable wireless USB connectivity beyond the hub itself.
