Eyeing ever-expanding home networks, Iomega releases the Desktop Hard Drive XL with four 250 GB drives offering a total of one Terabyte of storage accessible by USB or FireWire.

Upping capacity, reducing functionality and slapping another name on its StorCenter line of Network Attached Storage units for small businesses, Iomega has introduced the Desktop Hard Drive XL for consumers. Offering a total of one Terabyte of storage, the product lacks the Ethernet connectivity traditionally associated with Network Attached Storage (NAS) units, yet still offers a way for content-hungry home network owners to easily expand storage.

Hosting four separate 250 GB drives spinning at 7,200 RPM with a combined 8 MB of cache and configured in a RAID 0 striping mode, the Desktop Hard Drive XL 1 TB presents itself as a single drive to users connecting the device by way of USB 1.1, 2.0 or FireWire 400/800. Measuring 6.4 x 8 x 12.5 inches, the unit is considerably larger than other recent Iomega offerings such as the ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive and the Micro Mini, yet lacks some of the features found in its smaller sibling, the Iomega StorCenter.

Also featuring two pass through FireWire 800 ports and a USB 2.0 expansion port, the Desktop Hard Drive XL ships with Dantz Retrospect Express software for data backup and disaster recovery. Retrospect Express software offers the choice of incremental backups with multiple revisions, backups, and full disk imaging with multiple restore points for disaster recovery.

For Windows users, Iomega also bundles Iomega Automatic Backup Pro software for backup and disaster recovery purposes. IAB Pro software backs up files either on a scheduled or continuous basis, also giving users disaster recovery options from within Windows, eliminating the need to boot to DOS. Other capabilities of the software include AES encryption support; the ability to back up multiple file revisions; and file compression.

Immediately available, the Iomega Desktop Hard Drive XL 1 TB sells for $900 USD.
