A rotating antenna with a SiRFstar III chip and Windows Mobile 5.0 power Mio Technology's new Mio A201 GPS handheld, also fitted with a QVGA display and Bluetooth.

Updating its line-up of GPS-enabled handhelds, Mio Technology has introduced the Mio A201 as a far less expensive alternative to the company's much-anticipated Mio A701 communicator. A successor to the now-ageing Mio 168, the A201 offers a distinctly mid-range set of specifications running in tandem with the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform.

To go head to head with devices such as Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX N500 and N520 handhelds with fully integrated GPS antennas, the Mio A201 sports an external, rotating antenna which can be repositioned for use of the device both in portrait and landscape modes as enabled by Windows Mobile 5.0. Inside, a latest-generation SiRFstar III chip draws on 20 channels to enable improved performance over the A201's predecessors.

Considerably smaller than Mio Technology's dedicated GPS devices such as the Mio 268 and 269, the A201 is equipped with a QVGA display beneath which runs a 312 MHz Intel processor alongside 64 MB of RAM. An SD card slot is present for memory expansion, with the device also offering Bluetooth for short-range connectivity.

Delivered with the latest version of Mio Technology's map software, Mio Map 2, the A201 features an updated user interface and also supports the TMC (Traffic Message Channel) service by way of an optional accessory. The TMC service is freely available across most of Europe, except for the UK and France, providing updates and routing options on nearby traffic problems.

Claiming a battery life of up to 4.5 hours from its exchangeable, 1,200 mAh Lithium Ion battery, the Mio Technology Mio A201 will be available in stores from mid-December priced at €350 EUR.
