Streaming audio over Wi-Fi, tuning into Internet radio or playing from a local hard drive; the DSM-120 from D-Link does it all with support for MP3 and Microsoft's PlaysForSure formats.
Expanding its line-up of media players to include a dedicated audio streaming solution, D-Link has introduced the DSM-120. Sporting support for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, the audio player is capable of delivering audio through various means, including streaming Internet radio or music from a local network, as well as playing back audio directly from an optional 2.5-inch hard drive.
Similar to devices as varied as
the Acer Media Gateway MG-3001P and
the Nokia N80, the DSM-120 relies on the UPnP protocol to stream media over a local network, supporting MP3 and WMA formats as well as PlaysForSure for tieing into flat rate online offerings such as those from Yahoo! Music and Napster. Also supported are M3U and PLS playlist formats, with the DSM-120 offering a two-line LCD user interface for managing playback.
Should streaming audio over Wi-Fi not be an option, the DSM-120 also hosts a 2.5-inch drive bay for the mounting of an internal hard drive to play back music from. In addition, the unit also offers a USB 1.1 host interface which enables mass storage compliant devices such as
the JVC Alneo XA-HD500 portable audio player or any portable hard drive to connect to the DSM-120, which in turn can access and play back stored music.
Although the DSM-120 itself does not include speakers, the unit offers several output options including a stereo mini jack; RCA stereo connector; and optical SPDIF.
Available immediately in the US, the D-Link DSM-120 starts at $230 USD sans hard drive.
