Tactile and audible tactics signify Samsung's new MM-A900 and MM-A920 clamshells as they debut on Sprint's network - both setting Motorola's RAZR V3c squarely in their sights.
Taking a page out of Motorola's playbook, Samsung today announced the immediate launch of its MM-A900 and MM-A920 clamshell handsets on Sprint, focusing on slim form factors and music capabilities as selling points. Offering slightly different twists on a feature-rich concept, the two models will be competing directly with Motorola's newly launched RAZR V3c - not to mention several other recent entries in either space.
Measuring barely in excess of half an inch when closed, the MM-A900 places its chips on a slim form factor as its main selling point. A black clamshell, the dual-band CDMA handset supports EV-DO for high-speed data downloads, offering a pipeline to the numerous multimedia services from Sprint embedded in the phone.
Among these is Power Vision, which provides streaming audio and video content; the Music Store, which provides over-the-air purchase and download of songs; Music Choice, which offers streaming music; and the Sprint TV service which streams live TV on-demand. Additionally, the MM-A900 also incorporates a built-in media player and MP3 player, the former of which relies on the handset's internal 262K colour display with QVGA resolution whereas the latter is limited to an unknown amount of on-board memory as memory expansion is unavailable.
Other highlights of the handset include a 1.3 Megapixel rotating camera with camcorder capabilities, as well as USB connectivity with PictBridge for direct-to-printer output and Bluetooth for short-range connectivity. Also, the MM-A900 features speech-to-text dictation technoloy as seen in other recent high-end Samsung handsets such as
the MM-A940.
Boasting external music control keys adjacent to its external 65K colour display, the MM-A900 measures in at 3.9 x 2.0 x 0.6 inches, claiming a talk time of up to 3 hours.
The MM-A920, meanwhile, also features an embedded media and MP3 player with external navigation controls, supporting many of the same Sprint services as the MM-A900 including Power Vision; Music Store; Music Choice; and streaming TV. Furthermore, the 1.3 Megapixel camera slash camcorder, USB connectivity with PictBridge support and Bluetooth of the MM-A900 are also to be found, as is speech-to-text dictation technology.
Albeit similar in most respects, however, the MM-A920 bears a different design to that of the MM-A900, relying on a lower-resolution 176 x 220 pixel internal display and also incorporating the option of memory expansion courtesy of a microSD card slot. Dual stereo speakers and a speakerphone are also to be found, with the 3.6 x 1.9 x 1.0-inch, 3.8 oz handset claiming up to 3 hours of talk time.
Available immediately, the Samsung MM-A900 is now shipping from Sprint starting at $350 USD. The Samsung MM-A920 will debut on December 6, and is to start at the same price.
