No larger than the original, Nokia's 9300i communicator adds Wi-Fi connectivity to the EDGE support, Bluetooth, high-resolution display and super-size thumbboard of the 9300.

Improving on its existing communicator offerings, Nokia today introduced the Wi-Fi enabled 9300i, an upgrade to the company's existing 9300 communicator to match the functionality of the considerably larger 9500. Despite its added functionality, the 9300i retains the form factor of the 9300, offering a considerably lighter and smaller alternative to the 9500.

Also retained is the complete arsenal of functionality as offered by the original Nokia 9300, including its tri-band GSM support and EDGE along with Infrared and Bluetooth for short-range connectivity. As with the original 9300, the 9300i will be available in two versions, one of which is supports the GSM bands in use in Europe and Asia and the other of which is tailored to the Americas, both of which will feature Wi-Fi 802.11g connectivity for transfer speeds of up to 54 Mbps.

Sporting 80 MB of on-board memory as well as the ability to further add 2 GB courtesy of the built-in MMC card expansion slot, the 9300i also features a 65K colour widescreen display with a resolution of 640 x 200 pixels. Also, the 9300i offers a similarly wide QWERTY thumbboard available in several localized versions as well as an external numerical keypad and display for phone style use.

To compete against other thumbboard-equipped devices such as the Sony Ericsson P990, O2 XDA Exec and T-Mobile MDA Pro, the 9300 will offer support for a broad range of push e-mail solutions including BlackBerry Connect, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile.

Planned for availability in the first quarter of 2006, the Nokia 9300i is expected to sell in the €700 EUR range, with the Nokia 9300 currently selling as low as €400 EUR in some markets. The Nokia 9500, meanwhile, sells in the €625 EUR range.
