As if more proof was needed that thin is in, Samsung's new SGH-P300 is the size of a credit card and a stunning 8.9 mm thick - yet boasts a colour screen, 1.3 MP camera and audio player.
Hands-on experience
Unbelievably small, the SGH-P300 is a masterpiece of engineering. Thin and lightweight, it manages to cram a 1.3 Megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a striking OLED screen into a credit card size package - but in the process sacrifices usability at the altar of small. In fact, the SGH-P300 feels quite like one of those pocket calculators of yore, and even its petite size cannot hide the fact that it's a rather unattractive handset which is likely to offer very poor battery life indeed.
Specifications
Launched alongside the slim and 3G-enabled SGH-Z510 and SGH-Z540 models as well as the fully featured SGH-D800 and SGH-D820, Samsung's SGH-P300 is perhaps one of the most impressive technological feats from a maker that racks them up like there's no tomorrow. An unbelievable 8.9 mm thick, the handset has the footprint of a credit card - yet still manages to cram several advanced features into its compact body.
Starting with a 1.8-inch 262K colour LCD with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, the SGH-P300 supports both audio and video playback in a variety of formats. MPEG4 and H.263 are on board for motion pictures, while MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ files are supported by the audio player of the handset and can also be used as ringtones.
Besting the recently introduced NEC L1 clamshell handset - which itself dethroned the Motorola RAZR V3 as recently as in September, the tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz handset also integrates a 1.3 Megapixel camera for shooting stills and recording video. The amount of memory available to users is unknown, however, regardless of the amount of storage, users will be able to transfer content to the handset both by means of Bluetooth and USB.
Other highlights of the Samsung SGH-P300 include its minute 86 x 54 x 8.9 mm measurements and a weight of 65 g, speakerphone functionality and support for SyncML. Due out in Europe in time for the holidays, Samsung did not comment on the expected pricing of the handset.
