At 14.9 mm, Samsung claims its new SGH-Z510 and SGH-Z540 handsets as the righteous heirs to the throne of thin, complete with 3G, high-resolution displays and 1.3 MP cameras.
Samsung SGH-Z540 hands-on impression
Combining a razor-sharp, large display with excellent ergonomics and a slim - yet somewhat tall - clamshell form factor, Samsung's SGH-Z540 focuses on delivering a 3G experience without the all-encompassing feature sets for which the company is known. Its camera and music player both rank as mediocre, but business users should find a capable alternative complete with Bluetooth for hooking ones laptop up to the Internet.
Specifications
Adding to its vast arsenal of handsets, Samsung has introduced yet more handsets in the company's comprehensive line-up of 3G handsets. Introduced alongside the SGH-D800 and SGH-D820 sliders and the SGH-P300 credit card phone, the SGH-Z510 and SGH-Z540 both press their slim form factors as their claim to fame - but there's more to these handsets than what meets the eye.
The lesser capable of the two handsets - although such a statement is hardly fair - is the SGH-Z510, which offers tri-band GSM/GPRS and UMTS-based 3G. Fitted with a 1.3 Megapixel camera, the handset not only shoots stills but also records video in MPEG4 and H.263 formats, and is also capable of video telephony and streaming.
Further on the note of multimedia, the SGH-Z510 is also equipped with 138 MB of onboard memory for storing all sorts of content, including audio files in MP3, WMA, AAC and AAC++ formats for playback. Getting media onto the handset should be a relatively simple affair courtesy of its Bluetooth and USB support, and Samsung has also thrown in the Basic Printing Profile for direct-to-printer output.
Weighing in at 98 g, the 97 x 52 x 14.9 mm handset also chalks up a built-in document viewer and e-mail client to woo less-demanding business users, relying on its internal 2.2-inch QVGA 262K colour high resolution display for viewing. Also present is a 1.3-inch external display, also this in glorious technicolour with a resolution of 96 x 96 pixels.
Meanwhile, the SGH-Z540 offers a nearly identical feature set with some slight changes, additions and subtractions. Network connectivity remains the same with tri-band GSM/GPRS and 3G, as does the 1.3 Megapixel camera, whilst the internal display has been upgraded to 2.3 inches and the external display to a 128 x 128 pixel resolution.
In addition, the SGH-Z540 adds support for the Real Audio format for music playback, integrating dual stereo speakers and boosting internal memory to 150 MB. Slightly longer yet also slightly more narrow, the SGH-Z540 measures in at 99 x 51 x 14.9 mm and weighs 95 g.
Price and availability
Both models are due for introduction in Europe in time for the holidays, although Samsung did not say which exact markets would be graced with the two handsets. The expected pricing of the handsets was not disclosed.
