How's this for contrast: the massive, 65-inch VIERA TH-65PV500 plasma HDTV from Panasonic accepts itsy bitsy SD cards for recording video in MPEG4 format on the fly.
Continuing to innovate in its VIERA line of flat panel TVs, Panasonic is now shipping the 65-inch TH-65PV500 with a highly unusual feature; the ability to record TV directly to SD cards. A HD ready TV, the set integrates a DVB-T tuner for compatibility with digital terrestrial broadcasts such as the Freeview service in the UK, also accepting HDMI connections for additional video input.
720p and 1080i signal formats are supported, with the TH-65PV500 offering 8.6 Billion reproducible colours and 2,048 greyscales. A contrast ratio of 3000:1 runs in tandem with Panasonic's Real Black Drive System which the manufacturer claims ensures rich black levels, backed up by a sub-pixel controller system to combat zigzag or blur effects from diagonal lines.
In addition to displaying content from wired sources, the TH-65PV500 also includes PCMCIA and SD Card slots from which users can play back content in MPEG4 or JPEG format. What's more, owners of the TV will also be able to record TV straight to PCMCIA or SD cards in the MPEG4 format, allowing for the subsequent playback of recordings either on the TV itself or portable video players supporting this format.
For further functionality, prospective owners could also add Panasonic's
touch-screen frame to the TH-65PV500, essentially transforming the TV set into a giant touch-screen display. Shown at this year's CeBIT, the frame relies on infrared tracking of movements to track the position of a finger in 2D space which is then fed back to a compatible system such as a Windows based PC.
Available now in several European markets, the Panasonic VIERA TH-65PV500 sells in the €10,000 EUR range.
