Averaging Ethernet-like speeds of 100 Mbps, Netgear's RangeMax 240 Wireless Router obliterates previous wireless transfer speeds courtesy of MIMO technology.

Netgear has unveiled the fastest wireless router to yet in the RangeMax 240, a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) based solution which offers peak transfer speeds of up to a blistering 240 Mbps. As with the recently unveiled D-Link DI-634M, the RangeMax 240 does not qualify for the yet-to-be approved 802.11n standard in which the use of MIMO is to be standardized for manufacturer interoperability in a manner similar to Wi-Fi 802.11b/g products.

Through the use of MIMO, the RangeMax 240 achieves improved coverage and transfer speeds as a result of its use of multiple antennas, enabling what is according to Netgear average transfer speeds in the 100 Mbps range - comparable to what most Ethernet based wired networks offer.

Backwards compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g products, the RangeMax 240 only obtains such speeds when used in conjunction with other RangeMax enabled products from Netgear including its PCMCIA Type II Wireless Notebook Adapter and USB 2.0 adapter, the former of which will be available at the same time as the router itself whilst the latter will hit shelves in early 2006.

The router also offers hardware accelerated encryption for the 128 bit AES, TKIP and WEP standards as well as Quality of Service (QoS) management and support for WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK encryption standards. Other highlights include four 10/100 Ethernet ports, support for NAT and SPI firewalls; MAC address authentication; and two simultaneous VPN connections.

The Netgear RangeMax 240 Wireless Router will be available this holiday season in the US for $200 USD.
