The MM-A940 from Samsung brings 2 Megapixel imaging, EV-DO high speed data, music playback and voice recognition to mobile operator Sprint in a small, sleek and swiveling package.

Assuming its place among the highest-end handsets offered by Sprint, Samsung today announced the introduction of its MM-A940 multimedia handset with the newly merged mobile network operator. Despite a modest size, the handset incorporates a broad range of features including high-resolution imaging, high-speed data and the ability to carry out voice-to-text dictation.

A dual band 800/1900 MHz CDMA handset with support for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, the MM-A940 is capable of theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. Sporting a clamshell form factor, the handset also incorporates a swivel screen which can be configured in a camcorder-like arrangement to quickly allow for the activation of its camera features.

In camcorder mode, the MM-A940 offers users access to a 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus, multi-shot, self-timer and brightness adjustment features, capable of shooting stills as well as recording video. To alleviate memory shortages, the handset is equipped with a microSD expansion slot for which a 32 MB card comes bundled; 512 MB is the upper limit as of this writing.

The inclusion of memory expansion is also likely to please those who favour the music capabilities of the MM-A940, which is equipped with a music player supporting MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats as well as songs downloaded over-the-air from the Sprint Music Store. Additionally, the MM-A940 is capable of streaming video on demand.

Dual screens lets users interface with the handset, the primary of which is the internal 176 x 220 pixel, 262K colour TFT whilst the external 96 x 96 pixel, 65K colour display carries out lesser advanced tasks. Other highlights include support for Bluetooth and a number of profiles including Headset; Handsfree; File Transfer; Basic Printing; and Dial-Up Networking, as well as VoiceMode speech-to-text dictation technology from VoiceSignal.

Available immediately from Sprint, the Samsung MM-A940 sells from $250 USD with service agreement.
