The new Xacti X40 digital camcorder from Sanyo records video in MPEG4 format at 30 FPS and VGA resolution - plus snaps still images at a resolution of 4 Megapixels.

Following up on its Xacti VPC-C5, Sanyo has launched a the Xacti C40 - similar to its processor in most regards, yet with slightly reduced capabilities in the still imaging department. Retaining the same form factor as that of the VPC-C5, the C40 squeezes the ability to record video in VGA resolution at 30 FPS in MPEG4 and a 4-Megapixel CCD sensor into a package measuring a mere 108 x 69 x 34 mm and 152 g.

Sporting a 5.8x optical zoom lens with a five-point multi autofocus as well as manual focus, the Xacti C40 integrates a digital image stabilizer to counteract hand shake. A 1.8-inch semi-transflective display with an 85K pixel resolution swivels 293 degrees to let users record with the camera in a range of positions, also offering playback of recorded content.

Relying on MPEG4, the C40 records video at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 30 FPS, also recording stills at resolutions up to 3264 x 2448 pixels. Audio is recorded at a maximum of 48 KHz in 16-bit dual channel stereo, and the camcorder also offers a wind noise reduction mode.

Storing recorded content to SD cards, the Xacti C40 also offers an integrated flash with red-eye reduction, video out and macro mode with a minimum range of 1 cm. Connectivity is courtesy of USB 2.0, with PictBridge present for direct-to-printer output.

Available throughout Europe from November 2005, the Sanyo Xacti C40 is expected to sell in the €400 EUR range.
