Joining the ranks of Cingular's more unusual handsets, the new Samsung SGH-D307 opens in both portrait and landscape modes - the latter of which reveals a QWERTY thumbboard.

Taking a page from the designer's note book for the now-defunct Motorola MPx, Cingular Wireless has added the shape-shifting Samsung SGH-D307 to its portfolio. A tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz handset with GPRS/EDGE support, the SGH-D307 opens both horizontally and vertically to either a standard clamshell mode or a palmtop mode which reveals a QWERTY thumbboard.

A 96 x 96 pixel 4-greyscale display resides externally, whilst opening the device reveals a 262K colour display with a resolution of 176 x 220 automatically rotating to adapt to the mode in which the handset is opened. No camera is present, but the SGH-D307 compensates in other areas such as the inclusion of VoiceMode speech-to-text technology and speaker independent voice dialing, messaging and application services.

Also sporting Bluetooth, the SGH-D307 incorporates a number of messaging services ranging from SMS through MMS, Cingular Mobile Mail and instant messaging with either AOL, ICQ or Yahoo! services. Furthermore, the handset offers a web microbrowser, speakerphone capabilities, MP3 ringtones and 64-tone polyphonic ringtones as well as predictive text, Java support and a complete PIM suite.

Weighing in at 4.3 ox and measuring 3.7 x 1.9 x 0.9 inches, the Samsung SGH-D307 is now avialable from Cingular Wireless for $250 USD with subscription.
