To succeed the mobile network operator's MDA III, the T-Mobile MDA Vario offers a landscape thumbboard, Wi-Fi and a QVGA display in a highly pocketable form factor.
At the Systems 2005 fair today, T-Mobile confirmed the name and capabilities of its formerly glimpsed MDA III successor, to be known as the T-Mobile Vario. The device, based on the Wizard reference design from Taiwanese ODM HTC, will offer an advanced set of features which will give its predecessor a run for its money - yet at a far smaller expense in size and weight.
Slightly larger than T-Mobile's MDA Compact communicator, the device will harbour a 240 x 320 pixel display with the ability to natively rotate the screen in a landscape orientation courtesy of its operating system, which will be Windows Mobile 5.0. This will let users easily align the screen with the thumbboard of the device, also this oriented in a landscape fashion.
To support quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, the device will also offer GPRS and EDGE for high speed data transfers, as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11b for shorter-range connections. Also present is a 1.3 Megapixel digital camera, with the device slated to be part of T-Mobile's new web'n'walk range of devices, which come pre-loaded with the mobile version of the popular Opera browser to allow for on-the-fly reformatting of web pages to a small-screen friendly viewing experience.
T-Mobile did not provide further information concerning the expected pricing of the device, however stated that it expected to be able to bring the device to German shelves in time for Christmas.
