Sprint and Research In Motion (RIM) have announced the launch of the BlackBerry 7100i on the mobile network operator's Nextel network. Offering all of the functionality of past BlackBerry models, the 7100i goes on to add walkie-talkie services as well as real-time GPS navigation alongside Bluetooth, RIM's unique thumbboard and more.
Featuring a 240 x 260 pixel resolution colour display, the BlackBerry 7100i incorporates RIM's SureType keyboard which merges a phone keypad with a QWERTY keyboard in a unique layout. As with other recent BlackBerry devices, the smartphone offers phone functionality alongside wireless e-mail, various messaging options and push-to-talk, and is also fitted with a complete PIM suite, Internet microbrowser and memo pad.
In addition to standard BlackBerry features, the Blackberry 7100i also offers GPS technology for real-time, audible and visual turn-by-turn driving directions including automatic rerouting should drivers miss a turn.
A benefit of the Nextel network, the BlackBerry 7100i also offers the network's well-known walkie-talkie capabilities, including domestic and international Nextel Walkie-Talkie services. Also offered is the Talkgroup service, enabling instant connection with up to 100 other Nextel users who are on the same Fleet or Nextel Walkie-Talkie network within the same home market
As per usual, the primary function of the 7100i is the enabling of push-based wireless e-mail, with the device relying on triple DES and AES encryption for secure connectivity towards a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, available for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise. For smaller corporations and individual users, BlackBerry Internet Service allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal e-mail accounts including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and more.
Fitted with 64 MB of flash memory, 8 MB of SRAM and an exchangeable Lithium Ion battery, the BlackBerry 7100i will be available from October 24 in the US for a suggested retail price of $350 USD.
