The new VAIO VGC-VA series from Sony blends PC and TV functionality; processor speeds of up to 3.2 GHz, up to 320 GB of storage capacity and 256 MB of video memory are on the slate.
Sony today introduced the latest addition to the company's series of PC-TV combo products, the VAIO VGC-VA line, currently comprised of the VGC-VA10G and VGC-VA11G models. Similar in all aspects with the exception of storage size, processor speeds and a slightly different software bundle, the two VAIOs offer a powerful set of specifications in a form factor slightly reminiscent of an obese flat screen TV.
Hidden behind a 20-inch Xbrite LCD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, the VAIO VGC-VA11G conceals an Intel Pentium 4 640 processor with a clock speed of 3.2 GHz, backed up by 1 GB of 533 MHz DDR2 RAM. Dual 160 GB SATA drives spinning at 7,200 RPM provide a total of 320 GB of storage, and a Dual Layer DVD drive is also present in the combined enclosure.
With graphics powered by an ATI Radeon X700 chipset sporting 128 MB of dedicated video memory and the ability to access an additional 128 MB of the system's main memory, the VAIO VGC-VA11G incorporates a TV tuner with coaxial input as well as Composite and S-Video inputs. For audio, the system integrates five speakers for 2.1 audio output along with coaxial SPDIF.
Other connectivity includes 10/100 Ethernet, a 56K V.90 modem, four USB 2.0 ports, FireWire and Wi-Fi 802.11b.
The VAIO VGC-VA10G model, meanwhile, mimics the VAIO VGC-VA11G in all respects with the exception of it reducing storage to 160 GB; processor speed to 3 GHz; and offering a slightly different software bundle.
The Sony VAIO VGC-VA10G and VAIO VGC-VA11G will be available in North America from late October 2005, starting at $2,000 USD.
