Available in 160 and 250 GB sizes, Iomega's new StorCenter hard drive provides a centralized network storage solution for up to 25 users courtesy of Gigabit Ethernet and UPnP.
Iomega today announced the introduction of its new line of StorCenter network attached storage units targeted at home and small office users. Based around 7,200 RPM hard drives, the new line currently offers capacities of 160 and 250 GB, the latter of which includes an 8 MB cache, with the introduction of a 1 TB edition slated early 2006.
Compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, the drive relies on Iomega's FolderShare software to allow for the simultaneous use of the unit of up to 25 hours, complete with password protected access. Furthermore, the drive also comes with a copy of Iomega Automatic Backup Pro for Windows users, through which users can schedule backups of any network accessible location.
Relying on 10/100/1000 Ethernet for network connectivity, the StorCenter is also equipped with dual USB 2.0 expansion ports to allow for future drive expansion. These also double as USB hubs, letting users attach up to four additional USB 2.0 storage devices and two USB 2.0 printers simultaneously to a single StorCenter drive. Also, the device supports the UPnP protocol to allow for direct streaming of audio and video files to compatible media adapters.
Iomega expects the Iomega StorCenter 160 GB Network Hard Drive to be available in the US in late October 2005 for $200 USD, to sell alongside the 250 GB edition for $290 USD.
