Following suit in the music frenzy, Toshiba's TS 803 clamshell handset boasts not only 3G connectivity but also the ability to play back music - and is exclusive to Vodafone.

Marking the introduction of the maker's second 3G handset in Europe, Toshiba has announced the launch of its TS 803 clamshell handset. To be available exclusively from mobile network operator Vodafone, Toshiba is also joining the music fray by including music playback capabilities in its handset, a recent trend spearheaded by the now-delayed Nokia N91 and Samsung SGH-i300 smartphones.

Sporting a clamshell form factor and 1.3-inch external display with dedicated media keys, the TS 803 displays artist names, song length and other details when closed in addition to letting users scroll through tracks and save files in playlists. Capable of multi-tasking, Toshiba said its handset would let users surf the net or perform other functions whilst listening to music, automatically muting playback upon incoming calls.

Other features of the TS 803 include dual stereo speakers, a 2.2 Megapixel camera and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity.

Toshiba did not elaborate on the amount of memory available in the handset, nor whether memory expansion would be an option. The company did however state that the handset would have a standby time of up to 400 hours for GSM and 270 hours for UMTS, as well as a talk time of up to 320 minutes on GSM and 180 minutes on UMTS.

Further information concerning the expected availability and pricing of the Toshiba TS 803 on the Vodafone network was not available at the time of press.
