At under 2 KG, Sony's new VAIO S5 ultraportable integrates a 13.3-inch widescreen display with up to 120 GB of storage, a Dual Layer DVD drive and up to 2 GHz processor.
Updating its S series of ultraportables, Sony has announced the introduction of the VAIO S5, sporting a 13.3-inch widescreen display running atop the latest chipset and processor from Intel. Available in speeds of up to 2 GHz, the S5 offers a powerful set of specifications with hard drive sizes up to 120 GB and an integrated Dual Layer DVD drive.
Offered with a choice of Intel Pentium M 760 or 770 processors running atop an Intel 915GM chipset at 1.73 GHz and 2 GHz, respectively, the VAIO S5 can be configured with up to 2 GB of 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Hard drive choices range from 80 through 100 and 120 GB - all in SATA configurations, spinning at 5,400 RPM, whilst optical storage is integrated in all models courtesy of a Dual Layer DVD drive.
Despite its weight of a mere 1.95 KG, the VAIO S5 also incorporates a 13.3-inch WXGA display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and Sony's X-black technology, powered by a Nvidia GeForce Go 6400 graphics chip with 128 MB of dedicated video memory.
For connectivity, the S5 offers 10/100 Ethernet; a 56K V.92 modem; dual USB 2.0 ports; FireWire; VGA out and support for Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick Duo memory cards. On the wireless side, all models come equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g.
Measuring in at 313 x 225 x 35 mm, the VAIO S5 claims a battery life of up to 3 hours and 10 minutes, and is immediately available throughout Europe starting at €1,750 EUR.
