Among Hewlett-Packard's first handhelds to run Windows Mobile 5.0 are the hx2790, a powerful workhorse; and the lightweight rx1950, which pays hommage to designs of the past.

Hot on the heels of Dell's recent announcement of its first Windows Mobile 5.0 powered handhelds, the X51 series, Hewlett-Packard today unveiled four new iPAQ models running the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform. The iPAQ hx2790, hx2490 and hx2190 represent Windows Mobile 5.0 powered versions of HP's existing iPAQ hx2710, hx2410 and hx2110 models, whereas the iPAQ rx1950 takes a page straight out of the history books.

As the top model of three in the hx2000 series - excluding the Windows Mobile 2003 models - the hx2750 is a workhorse with its 624 MHz Intel PXA270 processor, 144 MB of non-volatile memory and 240 x 320 pixel 65K colour TFT screen. Also present in this model is Wi-Fi 802.11b and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a biometric fingerprint reader and dual expansion slots with support for SDIO capable SD/MMC cards and CompactFlash Type II.

Built around a similar framework, the hx2490 reduces processor speed to 520 MHz and omits the biometric fingerprint reader, but otherwise remains identical to the hx2790. Similarly, the hx2190 reduces processor speed to 312 Mhz, but also omits Wi-Fi 802.11b in addition to the biometric fingerprint reader.

Meanwhile, the rx1950 drops the boxy designs of recent HP handhelds in a return to the sleek and fluid forms of iPAQ classics such as the original h1900 and h4000 series, offering a rather modest set of specifications. At a weight of 125 g, the handheld integrates Wi-Fi 802.11b along with a 240 x 320 pixel screen and SDIO capable SD/MMC card expansion slot, offering up to 33 MB of non-volatile memory.

In related news, HP also announced that upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 are now available for purchase for its iPAQ hx2110, hx2410 and hx2750 series.

The HP iPAQ rx1950 series and HP iPAQ hx2000 series are immediately available in Europe and North America, with the iPAQ rx1950 selling for €330 EUR; the iPAQ hx2190 for €400 EUR; the iPAQ hx2490 for €450 EUR; and, finally, the iPAQ hx2790 for €550 EUR.
