The new VAIO TX series of ultraportable notebooks from Sony blends advanced specifications with a carbon fibre laminate chassis, X-black 11.1-inch widescreen LCD and DVD+/-RW drive.
Bolstering its offering of ultraportables, Sony today unveiled the new VAIO TX series, a notebook which merges a carbon fibre chassis with a bump in specifications as compared to other models in Sony's T series. With a total of four models to be offered, the most advanced includes a 1.2 GHz processor, 11.1-inch X-black widescreen LCD and a DVD+/-RW drive - and a battery which doesn't protrude from the unit itself.
Relying on 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium M 753 processors for power, the only model in the TX range which deviates from the aforementioned choice is the VGN-TX1HP which instead utilizes a 1.1 GHz Pentium M 733 processors. Both CPUs feature 2 MB of Level 2 cache and attach to a postcard-size motherboard with ten layers of circuitry developed from the ground up by Sony engineers.
The range is configured with 1 GB of 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM except for the VGN-TX1P, which has 512 MB. All models also feature a 60 GB 4,200 RPM hard drive, as well as integrated graphics provided by the Intel 915GMS motherboard chipset. An internal DVD±RW Double Layer optical drive is also standard, with additional features including Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a Memory Stick memory card slot.
Another aspect present in all models of the TX series is the 11.1-inch widescreen display with an aspect ratio of 16:9, offering a custom screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels as as opposed to conventional 1280 x 768 pixel WXGA. Additionally, the screen integrates Sony's X-black technology for improved performance.
The VAIO TX series also integrated external play controls and an independent AV subsystem which lets users play CDs and DVDs as well as browse photos without having to boot Windows. According to Sony, a six-cell battery will be able to provide up to seven hours of battery life.
Crafted from multi-layered Carbon Fibre to increase rigity whilst also reducing weight and thickness, the VAIO TX series is available immediately in three colour variations. Sony did not comment on the expected pricing of the notebook.
