Choice abounds as Apple unveils its iPod nano flash player, available in 2 GB and 4 GB editions - both either in black and white and sporting colour screens for photo viewing.

Apple today introduced the iPod nano, adding a fourth branch to the company's line-up of iPod portable audio players. Sporting Apple's patent pending Click Wheel user interface and a colour screen for photo viewing, the new player is immediately available and can be had in sizes of 2 GB and 4 GB as well as in either black or white colour configurations.

Measuring in at 3.3 x 0.98 x 0.33 inches and .78 oz, the iPod nano supports MP3 and AAC formats ranging from 8 through 320 Kbps, as well as Apple's own protected AAC format for compatibility with the iTunes online store. Also supporting Audible 2, 3 and 4 formats, the player connects to Apple's iTunes software client, also featuring the patent pending Auto-Sync technology as found in previous iPods.

At 1/3rd the size of Apple's hard drive based iPod mini, the flash-based iPod nano range is equipped with 1.5-inch colour screens with a resolution of 176 x 132 pixels for photo viewing. In conjunction with iTunes 5, also announced today, the player will automatically synchronize calendar and contacts information from Microsoft Outlook, and also offers a new password-protected screen lock feature to prevent data intrusion.

Featuring the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod and iPod mini, the iPod nano will in theory be compatible with the broad range of accessories developed for previous iPod products, of which over 1,000 have been manufactured, according to Apple's own numbers. Also present is an USB 2.0 port for transferring data, with Apple claiming a battery life of up to 14 hours from the new player.

Minimum requirements for the iPod nano include Mac OS X version 10.3.4 or Windows 2000/XP SP2 and and iTunes 4.9 or later.

The 2 GB and 4 GB white and black models of the Apple iPod nano are available worldwide immediately for $200 USD and $250 USD, respectively.
