The latest addition to Philips' Streamium line comes in a component-size form factor and streams music wirelessly from its 80 GB of HDD space over Wi-Fi 802.11g: meet the WAC5.
Not content with churning out the hotly anticipated Streamium WACS700, Philips has announced that another product similar in functionality will hit shelves before Christmas. Dubbed the WAC5, the newest addition to the Streamium range will, unlike the WACS700, come in a component-size form factor, also boasting double the storage courtesy of its 80 GB hard drive.
Similar to the WACS700, the Streamium WAC5 will assimilate CDs and store these as MP3 files, subsequently playing back music through up to five Streamium Wireless Music Stations simultaneously. Relying on Wi-Fi 802.11g and UPnP for distributing music, the WAC5, like the WACS700, also integrates a six-line LCD screen to display information such as artist name, album name, genre and track titles, all derived from the Gracenote CDDB database.
This information is also replicated on the LCD display of the remote control handset supplied with the system, from which users will be able to direct music to 'follow' a user from room to room, or alternatively play the same music or playlist on all receivers simultaneously and synchronized in a 'Music Broadcast' mode.
Designed to fit in as part of a stereo component system, the WAC5 with its integrated hard drive of 80 GB is 360 mm wide, and comes in a black-and-white glossy colour scheme.
The price of the Philips Streamium WAC5 has yet to be determined, however its counterpart, the WACS700, will retail for €1,000 EUR when it ships in Europe this month including one receiver. The WAC5, meanwhile, will go on sale throughout Europe in November.
