Philips' latest portable audio players offers 6 and 30 GB of storage, support for MP3, WMA WMA DRM10 and colour screens. Meet the GoGear HDD1630 and HDD6630.

Hurling itself head-first into a heated fray, Philips has unveiled the GoGear HDD1630 and HDD6330 portable audio players. Differing only in storage capacity, the two models offer respectively 6 and 30 GB of storage space, and otherwise remain identical in features - including their broad support for audio formats, colour screens and FM radios.

Supporting MP3, WMA and WMA DRM10 formats, the GoGear HDD1630 and HDD6330 are compatible with online subscription services such as Yahoo! Music and Napster, thus deserving of Microsoft's PlaysForSure brand. A 65K colour screen allows for viewing of photos in JPEG formats, and naturally also functions to navigate the device in tandem with the touch sensitive drag-and-tap sensory strip on front of the players.

Pictures can be navigated in full screen mode or as an array of thumbnails, and can be viewed one at a time, or automatically in a slideshow accompanied by music. As an alternative to music, users will also be able to listen to FM broadcasts, or, as suggested by Philips, record voice notes or 'impromptu Karaoke sessions'.

Equipped with USB 2.0 for high speed data transfers, the GoGear HDD6330 claims up to 15 hours of audio playback, whereas its smaller sibling, the GoGear HDD1630 keeps playing for an additional 3 hours; 18 in total.

The Philips GoGear HDD6330 and HDD1630 will be available in North America in October 2005 and will have a suggested retail price of $300 and $200 USD, respectively.
