Beating Kodak to the punch, Nikon's new Wi-Fi camera, the Coolpix P1, is due out later this month. Also on the slate: 8 Megapixels, a 3.5x zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD and more.
Aligning itself for a Wi-Fi standoff with competitor Kodak, Nikon today introduced Wi-Fi enabled Coolpix P1 compact digital camera. Boasting double the resolution of Kodak's EasyShare One and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g as opposed to 802.11b, the camera appears more powerful at first glance - yet the EasyShare One strikes back with a 3-inch swivel screen as opposed to the 2.5-inch of the P1, as well as the ability to e-mail pictures directly from the camera.
Based around a 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens with a 35 mm equivalent focal range of 36-112 mm, the Coolpix P1 offers a resolution of 8 Megapixels and focus range from 50 cm in normal mode down to 4 cm in macro mode. The camera's aperture ranges from F2.7-5.2, whilst the built-in flash has a range of 0.5-3.8 m and features red eye reduction as well as slow sync and curtain sync modes.
A selection of 16 preset scene modes is available to users, also including an aperture-priority Auto Mode that offers 10-step manual control over aperture settings in 1/3EV increments. Several capture modes are also available, including the ability to shoot continuously at 2.3 FPS in highest resolution mode, with the P1 also capturing video at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 30 FPS.
Naturally, the unique selling point of the P1 is its built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, which extend not only to 802.11b but also 802.11g, promising transfer speeds of up to 54 Mbps. This functionality enables the transfer of pictures from the memory card directly to a Wi-Fi connected PC, also enabling wireless printing in combination with an optional Wireless Priner Adapter relying on PictBridge support - also present through the USB 2.0 connectivity of the camera.
In-camera correction of images is also a possibility courtesy of Nikon's D-Lighting function, which aims to improve images taken with excessive back light or insufficient flash, automatically creating a copy of the selected shot with enhancements applied. Furthermore, a portrait mode specifically works to detect a human face in the frame to achieve sharp focus, whereas a Blur Warning function alerts users when a shot may have suffered from blur due to camera shake.
Measuring in at 91 x 60 x 39 mm and 170 g, the Nikon Coolpix P1 claims a battery life of up to 180 shots by the CIPA standard. The camera is due out in Europe and North America in late September, selling at €520 EUR and $550 USD, respectively.
