Assuming its position as the company's flagship compact digital camera, Canon today introduced the PowerShot S80. Featuring a resolution of 8 Megapixels, the camera revolves around a 3.6x optical zoom lens, a 2.5-inch LCD display and Canon's DIGIC II image processor, providing among other things the ability to record video at XGA resolution.
Succeeding Canon's PowerShot S70, the PowerShot S80 digital camera retains the wide angle UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Glass Aspherical) lens of its predecessor with a 3.6x optical zoom The camera allows users to capture a wider image area than most other compact digital cameras on the market, and also brings Canon's DIGIC II image processor and an 8-Megapixel CCD to the table.
According to Canon, the S80 has seen its autofocus improved to reduce the time required for focusing by up to approximately 20 percent compared to its predecessor. In addition, the company also said refined exposure control under low-light conditions results would not only result in better exposure accuracy but also in better focusing performance.
Courtesy of its DIGIC II image processor, the S80 model also supports movie recording at a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, also known as XGA, and a frame rate of 15 FPS - a first for compact digital cameras. Continuous recording of XGA up to a file size of 1 GB is available on the S80 model, which also offers the ability to print single or sequenced frames from movies.
The Canon PowerShot S80 offers users 21 different shooting modes, also introducing a new feature in its real time histogram which is displayed on the 2.5-inch LCD screen while shooting. For storage, the camera relies on SD/MMC cards, whilst for connectivity USB 2.0 is the standard of choice.
Canon's new PowerShot S80 digital Camera will be available in October for an estimated street price of $550 USD.
