What has a 2.2-inch colour display with QVGA resolution, support for both audio and video playback and up to 1 GB of memory? iriver's new U10 portable media viewer.

Hands-on impression

Sporting an unusual user interface in where buttons have been traded for a razor-sharp 2.2-inch screen which registers presses in four directions, the iriver U10 offers a satisfyingly simple, no-fuss interface. Audio quality receives high marks, and we're also pleased by the inclusion of WMA DRM. Video playback, however, is hard to applaud due to the comparably small screen, and the maximum-capacity 1 GB version is also limited with regard to space - although this issue is to an extent alleviated by the inclusion of a stereo FM radio.

Main specifications

- 2.2-inch screen with QVGA resolution and 262K colour depth
- 512 MB or 1 GB of storage
- Supports MP3, WMA and WMA DRM audio formats
- Line in recording
- Supports MPEG4-SP video format
- Supports JPEG picture format
- Stereo FM radio with scheduled recording
- Measures 69 x 47 x 16 mm
- Weighs 70 g

Availability and pricing

The iriver U10 is currently available in the US and Europe, with the 512 MB model selling for $200 USD/€230 EUR and the 1 GB edition for $250 USD/€260 EUR.
