The handset maker unveils the Linux-powered E895, adding Java and EDGE for high-speed data transfer to a compact clamshell with a 1.3 Megapixel camera and Bluetooth.

Announced today at the ongoing 2005 JavaOne Conference in San Fransisco, Motorola has introduced the compact E895 clamshell powered by Linux and Java technologies. The latest in the handset maker's growing line of Linux based handsets, the E895 features EDGE for high speed connectivity and a flurry of Bluetooth profiles - including the A2DP profile, which enables listening to audio over Bluetooth in stereo courtesy of the handset's audio playback features.

Sporting an 1.3 Megapixel camera, the E895 can draw on the entirety of its internal screen as a viewfinder to shoot stills and record video, also boasting a photo indicator light and 8x digital zoom. In addition, the handset is capable of video playback and 3GPP compliant streaming, as well as sharing recorded media through its support for SMS and MMS.

A tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz handset, the E895 is also equipped with audio playback features supporting multiple audio codecs, and can play back files from either its 10 MB of on-board memory or microSD cards up to 512 MB in size. To listen to audio, users must rely on an modified miniUSB jack placed externally, which is also where the second colour display of the E895 resides.

Relying on EDGE for high speed connectivity, the E895 also includes support for SyncML for over-the-air synchronization and Motorola's own Motosync solution which enables compatibility with Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol. On the note of contacts, the handset also automatically reorganizes contacts to list the most frequently used at the top of the phone book, which is one of its more unusual software features.

Other software aspects include speaker independent voice dialing, an HTML/XHTML capable microbrowser and instant messaging software as well as support for a veritable smorgasboard of Bluetooth profiles including GAP, OPP, SPP, HSP AG, HFP AG, DUN GW, A2DP, AVRCP, BPP, FTP, and JSR 82.

The Motorola E895 is expected to be available in Q4 2005. Details of its pricing were not available at the time of press.
