Nokia's 6270 is the Finnish maker's most capable sans-3G handset to date, offering a high resolution display, 2 Megapixel camera, radio and e-mail client with attachment support.

In conjunction with its annual Nokia Connection event, this year co-hosted in Helsinki and Singapore, Nokia today announced the 6270 as one of four slider handset being added to the Finnish manufacturer's extensive portfolio. Unlike the 6280, also announced today, the 6270 does not feature 3G connectivity, yet maintains a high-end feature set including a 2 Megapixel camera and high resolution screen.

As one of few Nokia handsets, the 6270 offers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity coupled with Bluetooth 1.2 for shorter-range connectivity, the latter of which also includes the rarely-seen SIM Access Profile (SAP) to allow for in-car Bluetooth systems to assume the identity of a handset temporarily. Comprehensively, the handset also includes Infrared and USB 2.0 via Nokia's proprietary Pop-port connector, adding a stereo FM radio with support for Visual Radio into the mix.

Also comprehensive is imaging support, with the 6270 offering a 2 Megapixel camera with a LED flash and, courtesy of its reliance on the 3rd revision of the Series 40 platform, the ability to use the full screen as a viewfinder in landscape mode. Sporting a QVGA display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 262K colour depth, the 6270 also both records and plays back video in several formats.

Not only supporting video, the 6270 also integrates a stereo audio player with support for MP3, AAC and M4A formats, running in tandem with the handset's stereo speakers with virtual surround sound. Further on the note of audio, the 6270 boasts support for Push-To-Talk, as well as Nokia's Xpress audio messaging and a number of other messaging options.

These include the common support for SMS and MMS, as well as instant messaging and presence-enabled contacts, along with an e-mail client for which Nokia claims attachment compatibility however did not disclose further information concerning the formats supported. Additional features include the inclusion of an XHTML microbrowser, support for themes and up to 9 MB of user available memory.

The Nokia 6270 has an estimated retail price of €300 EUR before subsidies or taxes, and is expected to begin shipping in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2005.
