Nokia's first 3G-enabled slider handset is due out in time for Christmas, offering a 2 Megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a 262K colour display with QVGA resolution.
Nokia 6280 hands-on impression
Albeit one of Nokia's largest handsets in recent months, the 6280 slider is also highly capable with a spacious, first-class display, a good keypad and the latest version of Nokia's Series 40 operating system - similar in appearance to the company's more advanced business phones. Speedy 3G connectvity and a high-quality 2 Megapixel camera allow for effortless video calling despite a less-than-minimalist user interface, but we're disappointed by the limited browser capabilities and mediocre music player.
Specifications
Today at Nokia Connection events in Helsinki and Singapore, Nokia introduced seven new handsets under the heading 'Simple Pleasures'. Four new slider handsets were revealed, including the Nokia 6270, the Nokia 6111 and the 3G-enabled Nokia 6280 for WCDMA markets, which is the first non-smartphone handset from the Finnish manufacturer to include a dual camera setup to allow for simplified video conferencing.
A tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz handset with support for GPRS/EDGE and WCDMA 2100 MHz, the 6280 is equipped with the first 262K colour screen in a Nokia handset to feature a QVGA resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The handset is expected to run on the 3rd edition of Nokia's Series 40 platform, also announced today, which features improved graphics and functionality over products currently on the market.
Another first in the 6280 is its integration of dual camera, which was previously only available in the Nokia 6680 smartphone. A back-mounted 2 Megapixel camera is used in conjunction with a front-mounted 0.3 MP camera to allow for rapid switching between views, with the 6280 also offering in-call initiation of video sharing should users want to start sharing video mid-call. Also, the 6280 offers a full-screen landscape mode for use when shooting stills or recording video, as well as a LED flash with a range of up to 1.5 meters.
Offering up to 74 MB of user available memory, the 6280 also includes the full compliment of Nokia's messaging and presence functionality with support for SMS, MMS and presence enhanced instant messaging, as well as an e-mail client supporting POP3/IMAP4/SMTP protocols. Additionally, the 6280 also offers Nokia's Xpress audio messaging as well as support for Push-To-Talk, and further on the note of audio integrates a stereo FM radio with support for Visual Radio and also a music player with stereo audio.
For shorter range connectivity, the Nokia 6280 integrates Bluetooth, Infrared and also USB 2.0 via Nokia's proprietary Pop-port interface, all of which enable synchronization with the Nokia PC Suite.
Measuring in at 115 g and 100 x 46 x 21 mm, the 6280 offers a claimed talk time of up to 3 hours and up to 250 hours when on GSM; up to 2.5 hours and up 200 hours, respectively, when on WCDMA.
Price and availability
The Nokia 6280 is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2005, at an estimated retail price of €375 EUR before subsidies or taxes.
