Following up on its Roomba smash hit, iRobot unveils a successor which not only vacuums floors but also scrubs and mops them: meet the Scooba.
Offering a sneak preview of the company's newest consumer robot, iRobot today unveiled the Scooba at the 'D: All Things Digital' conference in Carlsbad, California. Picking up where its popular vacuum cleaning predecessor, the Roomba, left off, the Scooba adds floor mopping to the arsenal of robotic house cleaning weaponry.
Capable of vacuuming, scrubbing and drying hard floors, the Scooba is has had a cleaning solution specially engineered for it by Clorox, a company which produces a range of chemical cleanser products. In development for approximately a year, the Scooba simultaneously vacuums, scrubs and dries hard floors using fresh water and cleaning solution from a clean tank, never spreading dirty water on the floor.
Cleaning wet spills in addition to dirt and grime, the Roomba is according to iRobot safe for use on all sealed hard floor surfaces, including wood and tile. If the company has its way, a limited number of Scooba Robotic Floor Washers will be available in time for the 2005 holiday season, with larger distribution planned for the first quarter of 2006.
