64-bit AMD processors, 256 MB of video RAM, a 15.4" widescreen and up to 2 GB of RAM; ASUS' new A6K laptop is a multimedia monster.

Courting gamers on the go, ASUS has announced the A6K, a high-end laptop equipped with a 15.4" widescreen display and a choice between three types of AMD processors - two of which are 64-bit. Upping the ante further, the new laptop boasts enough video memory to put most high-end desktops to shame, and also offers a range of other high-end features.

Utilizing either 25W or 35W AMD Turion Mobile 64-bit processors or a mroe conventional, 32-bit Sempron Mobile processor, the A6K offers DDR 333 MHz RAM configurations ranging from 512 MB up to a spacious 2 GB. Magnetic storage is courtesy of UDMA100 hard drives, where 4200 RPM models include 40, 60 and 80 GB editions and 5400 RPM models are available in 60 and 80 GB sizes.

The screen of the ASUS A6K is of the glare variety, and can be had in either 15" 4:3 format or 15.4" 16:9 format, offering respectively XGA/SXGA and WXGA/WSXGA+ resolutions - the latter up to 1680 x 1050 pixels. Powered by a 256 MB Nvidia GeForce Go6200 chip, the A6K also offers up to UXG 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution powering of CRT displays, and harbours a 16:9 format touchpad to match widescreen editions.

Several optical drive options are present in the A6k, including a DVD-ROM; DVD+CD-RW; and DVD+/-RW module. Also found is an integrated 1.3 Megapixel camera placed above the display, adjacent to a dedicated microphone for videoconferencing purposes.

For connectivity, the A6K kicks off with built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g or as a factory option 802.11a/b/g, following up with 10/100 Ethernet and a 56K V.90 modem; four USB 2.0 ports, a single IEEE1394 port, SPDIF digital audio out and S-Video Composite video out. Furthermore, the A6K also accepts PCMCIA Type II cards along with SD/MMC cards, Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO cards.

Measuring in at a hefty 354 x 284 x 23 mm and 2.8 KG, the ASUS A6K will be available in Europe this summer and sell in the 2000 EUR range.
