Rugged and environmentally friendly, Nokia's 5140i offers up fitness applications, improved push-to-talk capabilities, an FM radio and even a digital camera.
Improving on previous outdoor models such as the 5100 and 5140, Nokia today introduced the 5140i fitness phone. Built around the same concept as its predecessor, the 5140, the 5140i remains targeted at open sky workers and - most of all - fitness enthusiasts with its dust and splash resistance coupled with a solid set of basic features.
A tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz handset, the 5140i comes with a 'Fitness Coach' application which enables users to track sports performance over time or sharing of results via SMS with coaches or team-mates. As with its predecessor, it is compatible with a range of sports instruments and heart rate monitors from Polar Electro, providing a view to data gathered by instruments from Polar.
Among the devices supported are Polar's Running Computer S625X and the Cycling Computer S725, as well as AXN 500 and AXN 700 Polar Outdoor Computers and an upcoming Fitness F55 heart rate monitor.
Weighing in at 101 g and measuring 107 x 47 x 24 mm, the 5140i features a 65K colour STN screen with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, which also doubles as a viewfinder for the integrated 0.3 Megapixel camera. These features are joined by an integrated stereo FM radio, as well as push-to-talk with a dedicated button and newfound support for MP3 ringtones.
Also new in the 5140i is support for Nokia's Flash Messaging, which relies on flashing LEDs to signal messages over short distances from one handset to another. In addition, the 5140i also supports SMS and MMS messaging, as well as Wireless Village based instant messaging and presence support. Favouring infrared over Bluetooth, wireless local connectivity in the 5140i is limited, however the handset also includes Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port connector.
For those keen on surfing on the petite screen, the 5140i includes a WAP 2.0 microbrowser, coupled with J2ME MIDP 2.0 support to enable 3rd party applications; tools more specific for the 5140i's trade include a flashlight LED, compass, thermometer, stopwatch and countdown timer.
The Nokia 5140i is expected to leave the starting block and begin shipping in the second quarter of 2005 with an estimated retail price of 200 EUR.
