It's Toshiba's thinnest, lightest laptop to feature a 12.1" display: meet the Portege R200 ultraportable, featuring a 60 GB HDD and 1.2 GHz processor.

Improving on the maker's already-slim Portege R100 ultraportable, Toshiba today unveiled the Portege R200, a 2.68-pound laptop with a 12.1" 4:3 display introduced in conjunction with the company's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the introduction of its first laptop. Out now in the U.S., the R200 shares the bulk of the specifications of the libretto U100, also announced today, however foregoes small size in favour of a larger display and keyboard.

Powered by a Pentium M 753 processor running at 1.2 GHz atop an Intel 915 chipset, the Portege R200 comes equipped with a 60 GB hard drive and 512 MB of RAM. UP to 128 MB of this is shared by the onboard Intel Graphics Accelerator 900 video chip, which powers the 4:3 format 12.1" TFT display with an XGA resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels.

Similar to other recent models, the Toshiba Portege R200 is equipped with Toshiba's EasyGuard technology, which includes several software and hardware measures to protect data. This includes biometric security courtesy of an integrated fingerprint reader and the Toshiba Trusted Platform Module (TPM) embedded security chip for data encryption purposes. In addition, the R200 incorporates a 3D accelerometer which detects motion to enable the laptop to park hard drive heads in case the laptop is dropped, as well as a shock-protected display.

Connectivity is aplenty in the Portege R200, which offers up a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port coupled with a 56K V.92 modem, 2 USB 2.0 ports, a PCMCIA Type II expansion slot and a SD/MMC card expansion slot. Furthermore, the R200 comes equipped with a slim replicator port, Infrared, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, the latter of which Toshiba claims improved reception for courtesy of its Diversity Antenna design which comprises dual antennas concealed in the laptop display compartment.

Available immediately in the U.S., the Portege R200 is shipping in the above configuration for $2100 USD.
