Following a three-year hiatus, Toshiba revives its libretto line of ultraportables with the 2.16-pound U100, sporting a 1.2 GHz processor, 7.2" display and 60 GB HDD.
As part of Toshiba's 20th anniversary celebration of the first laptop computer, the company today announced that it is breathing life back into its libretto line of ultraportables with the utterly miniscule U100. Weighing in at a mere 2.16 pounds, the libretto U100 boasts powerful specifications and one of the - if not the - smallest widescreen displays on the market at a mere 7.2 inches.
Based around an Intel 855 chipset and Pentium M 753 processor running at 1.2 GHz, the libretto U100 features Toshiba's new EasyGuard technology, a series of hardware and software measures to enhance data security. Among these is a hard drive protection system which relies on a 3D accelerometer to halt the drive heads of the 4200 RPM, 60 GB hard drive of the ultraportable to prevent data in case of an accidental drop.
512 MB of 333 MHz RAM accompanies the processor and hard drive, of which the onboard Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chip draws from 16-64 MB of memory. This powers the 7.2" WXGA display with a resolution of 1280 x 760 pixels and Toshiba's TruBrite technology; the company's synonym for LED backlighting. Also present is a software zooming utility, which according to Toshiba will let users zoom in or out on parts of the screen image.
Powered by Windows XP Professional, the libretto U100 also offers a flurry of connectivity options despite its petite size, including 10/100 Ethernet, a 56K V.92 modem, IEEE1394 (FireWire), two USB 2.0 ports and, impressively, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g. Additionally, the libretto also offers a mini connector for VGA out as well as a docking connector for its docking bay which enables a number of additional connectivity options.
Lastly, the libretto U100 also biometric security courtesy of its integrated fingerprint reader, as well as a power save utility designed by Toshiba to make the most of performance and battery life.
Measuring in at 8.3 x 6.5 x 1.2 inches, the Toshiba libretto U100 is immediately available for a estimated retail price of $1999 USD. According to a spokesperson for Toshiba in the UK, a possibility exists that the libretto U100 could also be made available in Europe this summer.
