The latest ultraportable from Dell offers a 12.1" widescreen display, 1.1 GHz processor and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g at the mere weight of 2.5 pounds.
Following in the footsteps of its original ultraportable offering, the Latitude X300, Dell today introduced the Latitude X1. Smaller than its sibling, yet equally fully featured, the X1 offers a widescreen display coupled with light weight and a broad range of features whilst also carrying on the legacy from the X300 in omitting any sort of internal optical drive solution in order to keep size and weight to a minimum.
Powered by a 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M 733 processor, the Latitude X1 offers from 256 MB to 1.28 GB of DDR2 RAM and a choice of either 30 or 60 GB hard drives. Starting at 2.5 pounds, the X1 boasts a 12.1" display with WXGA (1280 x 768 pixels) resolution which is considerably shorter than the display found in the X300. Also, the LCD back has been reinforced to counter external pressure, a known issue with the Latitude X300 series.

Lacking an internal optical drive or drive bay, a range of optional external solutions are available with the X1, including an 8x DVD-ROM; 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive; 8x DVD+/-RW drive, the venerable floppy disk drive and a 40 GB hard drive.
For connectivity, the X1 offers an integrated 56K V.92 modem and 10/100/1000 Ethernet connectivity, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR - the latter of which is now standard, as opposed to being optional in the X300. Also, the X1 harbours dual USB 2.0 ports, as well as a VGA connector, SDIO capable SD/MMC and CompactFlash memory card slots; and an IEEE 1394 jack - gone is the PCMCIA Type II well found in the X300.

Measuring in at 286 x 197 x 25 mm or 11.3" x 7.7" x 1", the X1 comes with a power adapter near half the size of other Latitude notebooks, and also includes a Trusted Platform Module (TPM 1.1) for generating and storing onboard encryption keys.
Starting at $1,699 USD, the Latitude X1 is immediately available in North America. According to a Dell spokesperson, the Latitude X1 will also be available in Europe 'soon', however a request for further information concerning pricing and availability was declined.
