Preview: Samsung YP-T8By Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 21 March 2005
Jørgen Sundgot fiddles with Samsung's new flash audio player, available in sizes up to 2 GB and boasting a screen that'll make your eyes pop. Oh, and it plays video.

Having already covered Samsung's YH-J70 and YH-J50 portable audio players out of CeBIT, it's time to move from hard drive based offerings to the flashy stuff: the Korean manufacturer's YP-T8 might have a design that, like its hard drive based brethren, is a bit on the unfortunate sides - but a broad feature set makes up for shortcomings in the department of aesthetics.

Samsung YP-T8

With a slightly tapering design and available in either white or black, the main draw of the YP-T8 is its positively superb 1.8", 262K colour TFT screen. In my personal opinion, it's far too extravagant for a Flash-based player; what battery life is gained from using Flash memory is lost due to the screen - but I'll have to admit it looks great, and completely eliminates squinting for titles or navigation alternatives.

To be had in sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB, the YP-T8 supports both MP3, WMA and Secure WMA file formats, as well as Ogg Vorbis and ASF. Unlike the YH-J50 and YH-J70, it doesn't support JPEG photo viewing, which I find odd given its USB Host capabilities and large screen. What it does support, however, is the same pointless MPEG4 video playback - and as technically impressive as it is, there's just no point. No. Point.

Claiming 20 hours of battery life from the non-exchangeable Lithium Ion battery, the YP-T8 also supports USB 2.0 for PC connectivity. To the degree I can claim having determined anything at all on a noisy showfloor, I found the audio quality of the player to be quite good, with a broad register and sufficient volume.

As per usual, Samsung has provided no information concerning the expected availability and pricing of the YP-T8 - but if they're hoping to gain any traction, they'd better not stray too far from the pricing of the iPod shuffle, fabulous screen or not.
