Jørgen Sundgot feels up Fujitsu Siemens' newest Tablet PC, the ST5022, equipped with a 12.1" screen, 1.1 GHz processor and good looks.
Although interest in tablets appears to have been slowly declining since the introduction of Microsoft's Tablet PC edition of Windows XP, they're still alive and kicking. Having weathered the fickle pen computing market since 1992, Fujitsu Siemens was showing off the latest incarnation of its Stylistic Tablet PC series, the ST5022, at this year's CeBIT as the most recent Tablet PC to make headlines.
The third model in the manufacturer's Stylistic series of Tablet PCs, Fujitsu Siemens' ST5022 offers a feature set largely similar to the existing ST5020 and ST5021 models with the exception of its screen, which has reworked to allow for improved viewing both in- and outdoors, and also adds a fingerprint sensor for biometric security.
Weighing in at 1.55 KG and with an A4 footprint, the ST5022 runs Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition powere by an Intel Pentium M 733 processor running at 1.1 GHz. Configurations range from 256 MB to 2 GB DDR RAM, with hard drives being delivered in sizes of 40, 60 and 80 GB.
Powering the internal, 12.1" transmissive TFT display with XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) is an integrated Intel 855GME chip which supports using up to 64 MB of main memory as video memory. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take the ST5022 outdoors for a quick spin, but indoor performance was very good as compared to the other models in this series, and the anti-glare coating seemed to do a decent job despite the numerous light sources.
For those so inclined, the ST5022 can also power a secondary display through its VGA port at UXGA resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels) as well as integrates support for multi-display functionality.
A range of connectivity options are present, including a 56k V.92 modem, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Bluetooth 1.2, two USB 2.0 ports, one Type II PCMCIA expansion slot, a dedicated Smart Card reader, an Infrared port and a combo Memory Stick/SD Card slot. Additionally, buyers can also opt for the inclusion of either Wi-Fi 802.11b/g or Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g - in other words something of a smorgasboard, and particularly so considering the minute size of the tablet.
Other highlights of the Stylistic ST5022 include a dual microphone system which, according to Fujitsu Siemens, filters out background noise when recording, as well as a fingerprint sensor for biometric-based security. Furthermore, Fujitsu Siemens claims an impressive 9 hours of battery life for the tablet, for which I have my doubts - but everything else seems to be on par with the maker's promises, so I'll be all the more pleased if this holds true.
Available rapido in several European markets, recommended prices for the Fujitsu Siemens Stylistic ST5022 start at 2899 EUR, or $3,800 USD.
