Jørgen Sundgot has a play with Samsung's iPod mini competitor, the YH-J50, sporting a 6 GB hard drive, broad format support - and even video playback.
As the iPod mini comes under attack from an increasing number of manufacturers, it's also becoming increasingly clear that few of them have the potential to unseat smallest member of the reigning line of monarchs of the portable audio revolution. Apparently not rattled by the challenge ahead, Samsung unveiled its new YH-J50 model last week, sporting either 5 or 6 GB of storage and an extensive range of features.

Audio format support is broad, with MP3, WMA, Audio ASF and WAV on the slate, and like its bigger brother, the YH-J70, the YH-J50 also offers photo viewing and even video playback courtesy of the JPEG and MPEG4 formats, respectively. As impressive as this is, however, I'm forced to state my opinion that - as is the case with the YH-J70 - a screen smaller than two inches is absolutely useless for video playback, and only of limited use for photo viewing.
Still, the YH-J50 performs well despite its screen limitations, which only relate to size: the overall quality of the display is superb, being both extremely crisp and bright. The user interface, however, is perhaps best described as less intuitive, yet gets the job done - and looks pretty while doing it.

Despite its superior feature set, however, the YH-J50 is unlikely to be able to take on the iPod mini. The reason? It's only moderately attractive, and lacks the intuitiveness of its arch nemesis' interface - but it's got 1 GB more storage, and 25 hours of battery life, so for those choosing function over form, I'm sure it will be a good alternative.
