Jørgen Sundgot spies on Motorola's new 3-Megapixel cameraphone, the E1120, at CeBIT - out of reach, but not out of sight.

Finally catching up to its competitors in the department of digital imagery, Motorola last week unveiled the E1120 at CeBIT, representing the handset maker's first crack at a plus-2 Megapixel camera phone. While they were at it, they just as well made up for past dues, and squeezed a 3 Megapixel camera in there, outpacing even the also-announced V1150 3G handset by a whole megapixel.

A 3G handset, the primary focus of the E1120 is - as one would expect - on imaging, as the handset is equipped with auto focus, 8x digital zoom and a 30 Lux photo light for improving photos taken in poorly lit conditions. Still, despite its focus on imaging, the E1120 offers a relatively advanced feature set in other departments, including multimedia.

Equipped with a 3D accelerator chip for gaming, the E1120 also boasts an MP3 player, complete with dual speakers and virtual surround sound - which I presume will be utterly pointless, but makes a nice addition to an already extensive feature list. More impressively, the device is capable of playing back Windows Media Video files, which suggests a possible tie-in with carrier-driven video download services.

Users will also be able to record video clips as well as edit them on the device, and courtesy of an additional 0.3 MP camera, there's also the ability to conduct two-way video calls. For additional storage, the E1120 will also come equipped with an microSD expansion slot, and features Bluetooth for connecting to other devices such as headsets and computers.

Less exciting, but nonetheless vital, the E1120 also offers MMS and instant messaging, as well as an e-mail client, AGPS and a WAP 2.0 microbrowser. More excitingly, there will also be speaker independent voice dialing, however from the preliminary information released by Motorola this might prove limited to digit dialing; disappointing, if it proves to be the case.

Due out in time for Christmas, you've probably already guessed that Motorola has decided to keep the price of the E1120 a well-kept secret until later this year - likely in an attempt to avoid accidental aneurisms.
