Preview: Samsung SGH-Z700By Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 15 March 2005
Adding more features by the minute, Samsung unveils the 3-Megapixel SGH-Z700 for 3G networks; Jørgen Sundgot investigates at CeBIT 2005.

Guess what? There's a new petite clamshell 3G handset from Samsung, and it boasts a camera with more megapixels than any of its previous models - 3 of them, to be exact. If that sounds similar, that's because the Korean manufacturer's new policy appears to be that every single new handset unveiled must cause at least one feature aspect of its predecessor to look feeble in comparison.

So, also, is the case with the SGH-Z700, the maker's latest 3G clamshell with a swiveling 260K TFT colour screen of typical Samsung brilliance, joined by an OLED external display. Boasting a 3 Megapixel camera for snapping stills and shooting video, the SGH-Z700 supports MPEG4, H.263 and, oddly, Real Video - quite an uncommon feature in a landscape almost entirely dominated by MPEG4.

Also equipped with a front-mounted 0.3 Megapixel camera for full duplex video telephony, the SGH-Z700 sports additional features for keeping users visually entertained, such as video streaming and messaging. Should they wish something less engaging, there's also an audio player present with support for MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats, as well as dual speakers with virual surround and 64-chord polyphonic ringtones - after all, anything below 50 is for plebes.

There are enough connectivity options to give you radiation poisoning, with the SGH-Z700 offering tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz (the Europeans get all the fun phones) in addition to 2100 MHz WCDMA (UMTS), Bluetooth and also good old Infrared. Then there's USB connectivity, which also includes support for PictBridge to enable direct-to-printer output, which, incidentally, is also possible via Bluetooth courtesy of the BPP profile.

Ever smaller and ever lighter, the SGH-Z700 weighs in at 125 g and measures what for a 3G handset is a miniscule 96 x 49 x 27 mm - and of course, Samsung won't say a word about when we can expect it to hit shelves, nor at what price.
