Preview: Samsung 82F5By Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 15 March 2005
At the CeBIT showfloor, Jørgen Sundgot sees eye to eye with Samsung's record-breaking, high-definition 82-inch LCD flat screen TV.

Call it delusions of grandure, call it 100 KG of madness, call it what you want: Samsung's 82" LCD TV is sure to make an impact no matter how nutter it looks with a TV that'll reach your average person to the shoulders. Shown at CeBIT 2005 for the first time, the Korean electronics giant was strutting all sorts of stuff, but there was one item that seemed to get most of the attention - and the 82F5, as the behemoth is lovingly known, was it.

Outpacing its nearest competitor by 17 inches, the 82F5 offers a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with progressive scanning and a 16:9 screen ratio, as well as a brightness of 500 nits; a razor-sharp contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and 90% of the colour gamut of the NTSC standard. As to the latter I can't vouch, but the picture quality of the demonstration model shown here at CeBIT was certainly impressive, as was the viewing angle and response time - a mere 8 ms, according to Samsung.

Samsung 82F5

I know what you're thinking right now. You're thinking "now, if I could just hook this up to my PC and go for a quick round of Doom III". Well guess what: you're in luck, as the 82F5 offers up dual HDMI ports, allowing use of it as what would quite frankly be the most kick-arse computer monitor of all time - perhaps with the exception of Samsung's 102" Plasma TV, also shown at CeBIT.

Other highlights include dual tuners, which allow for picture-in-picture and side-by-side viewing of two video feeds of the user's choice, as well as support for SRS TruSurround XT to enable virtual surround sound. Slated for mass production in 18 months or so, nobody has the faintest as to what the pricing of the 82F5 will be - aside from it being on the pricier side of ridiculously expensive.
