Samsung YH-999 now shipping in EuropeBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 7 February 2005
The second portable media viewer based on Microsoft's PMC platform, the 20 GB, 3.5" Samsung YH-999 finds its way to European shelves.

Announced at the introduction of Microsoft's Portable Media Center platform, Samsung has now begun shipping its YH-999 portable media viewer in larger European markets. Recently hitting UK shelves, the device is based on the aforementioned PMC platform, and is capable of playing back video and audio - preferably using Windows Media formats - on its 3.5" display.

Slimmer than most portable media viewers, the YH-999 measures a mere 21 mm thick yet is not particularly smaller than most of its competitors due to the square design. Laid out with the 3.5" screen with 65K colours on top and the navigational interface below, the YH-999 incorporates a 20 GB hard drive; the same size as that of the only other device released using Microsoft's PMC platform, the Creative Zen PMC-120.

As is the case with other PMC-based devices, the YH-999 offers a user interface much like that of Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition platform, and supports primarily Windows Media Audio and Windows Media formats as well as the widely popular MP3 format. The player is capable of playing back Windows Media 9 video at 500 kbps and the maximum resolution of the screen, which is 320 x 240 pixels.

The YH-999 also offers a 3.5 mm earphone jack and composite video out, as well as a USB 2.0 port for PC connectivity. Now shipping, the device sells in the $750 USD range.
