Understated style, a wireless colour screen remote and modularity signify Sonos' new wireless Digital Music System for the home.
Sonos today announced that the its digital audio solution for the home, the Sonos Digital Music System, has begun shipping to pre-order customers in the United States. A multi-zone digital music system with a wireless, colour LCD screen controller, users can create up to 32 zones and control the music played in each of the zones independently with the use of a single controller.
Comprised of two components, the Sonos Digital Music System draws on a device dubbed ZonePlayer to distribute, play and amplify music in any pre-designated 'zone' in the home. Controlling audio is the Sonos Controller, a wireless handheld device with a colour screen which allows the user to access, customize and control the music anywhere - from the bedroom to the backyard.

Incorporating a 50 Watts/channel amplifier for connecting existing speakers into the system, the ZonePlayer can access and play a variety of music formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV, stored on a PC, Mac or Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. In addition, the solution comes bundled with customizable Internet Radio stations, and offers both Ethernet and Sonos' proprietary, mesh-based wireless network for data transmission purposes.
The Controller, meanwhile, features a touch-sensitive scroll wheel and lets users either control zones individually, or have the same music play in all zones synchronously. Playlists are supported, as is a shuffle option, with the Controller displaying album art when available. Lastly, the Controller also includes a motion detector which switches the display on when someone picks it up.
Sonos now offers an introductory bundle of two Sonos ZonePlayers and a Sonos Controller for $1,199 USD. Additional ZonePlayers retail for $499 USD, with additional Controllers going for $399 USD. Also, Sonos said it expects to commence international distribution of the Digital Music System later this year.
