A 12" widescreen display, DDR2 memory, Wi-Fi and a weight of a mere 1.6 Kg are tell-tale signs of ASUS' newest ultraportable, the W5A.
Following up on its S5N series ultraportable, ASUS has introduced the W5A series, an ultraportable with a built-in 1.3 Megapixel web camera with swivel capabilities. Based on Sonoma, the latest generation of Intel's Centrino platform, the W5A comes with support for DDR2 RAM, PCI Express expansion and processors ranging up to 2.13 GHz.
Sporting a 12" widescreen display with a WXGA resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and anti-glare coating, the W5A measures in at a distinctly minimal 29.7 x 22 x 2.7-3 cm and a weight of 1.6 Kg. Based on the Intel 915GM chipset, the W5A supports DDR2 400/533 MHz RAM, and can accomodate up to 768 MB at most. For a processor, users can choose from Intel's Pentium M 730-770 range, offering a front bus speed of 533MHz, and internal clock speeds ranging from 1.6 through 2.13 GHz with 2 MB of Level 2 cache.

Available with 4,200 RPM hard drives ranging from 40 GB through 60 GB and up to 80 GB, the W5A also incorporates Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g, with Bluetooth as a build-to-order option. Users get a choice of several optical drives, the most advanced of which is a 24x DVD±RW/DVD-R variety.
Despite a small size, the W5A also integrates a number of connectivity options such as an onboard 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port and a V.92 modem. In addition comes a VGA port for connecting external displays, 3 USB 2.0 ports, a 3.5 mm analog audio out jack, a 3.5 mm microphone in jack, a SPDIF connector, an IEEE 1394 port and finally S-Video out.
Furthermore, the W5A also offers a built-in 27 MHz RF receiver compatible with certain Logitech cordless mice, as well as a PCMCIA Type II expansion slot and a multiple-standard card reader supporting SD Card, MMC, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro formats.
