ATSC high-definition TV and LightScribe direct-to-disc labeling technology are among the novel features found in HP's new z550 series media PCs.
At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, HP unveiled two new addition to its line-up of media PCs. Both belonging to the company's Digital Entertainment Center line, the z552 and z555 are powered by Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition and offer novel features such as LightScribe disc labeling and support for ATSC high-definition TV.
Sharing the vast majority of their functionality, both the z552 and the z555 come in black, 17" CE rack form factors with a LCD front display. A front-mounted 9-in-1-carder is joined by a 16x DVD±R/RW double-layer DVD recorder offering DVD playback at 480p resolution. The back conceals 5 video out connectors, including DVI-D, component video, VGA, S-Video and
composite video output ports, as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound support via coaxial RCA or optical toslink connections and analog 7.1 pre-amp surround sound.

Where the two models differs are in areas pertaining to storage, graphics and tuning capabilities. The HP z552 Digital Entertainment Center includes dual NTSC TV tuners with
ability to pause, play, and record two simultaneous channels, a 200 GB 7200 RPM
Serial ATA hard drive and an ATI RADEON X300 SE PCI-Express graphics card.
The HP z555 Digital Entertainment Center, meanwhile includes a single ATSC over-the-air
high-definition TV tuner for the ability to pause, play and record HD over-the-air
programming, a 250 GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA hard drive and an nVidia GeForce 6600 PCI-Express graphics card.
Returning to common features, both models provide front bays for HP's Personal Media Drives, which come in 160 GB and 300 GB capacities, and also offer LightScribe disc labeling technology which enables users to place a laser imprint on a CD or DVD. In addition, both models also offers 1000 Gigabit Base-T Ethernet connectivity, as well as integrated Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g support and FM tuners with pause and replay capabilities.
Powering the system is an Intel Pentium 4 530J processor with a clock speed of 3 GHz, coupled with 512 MB of PC3200 DDR RAM. Also, both models come with wireless keyboards with integrated trackball mice.
According to HP, both the z552 and z555 models will be made available in the U.S. market in the Spring of 2005, retailing at $1,499 USD and $1,999 USD, respectively. European availability is as of yet unknown.
