Archos has launched the Pocket Media Assistant PMA400, the latest addition to the company's line-up of portable media viewers. Previously known as the AV500, the PMA400 combines full video and audio capabilities with Wi-Fi connectivity, and as opposed to previous models does not run on Archos' proprietary operating system but rather Linux.

New to Archos' line-up, however, is the introduction of integrated 802.11b Wi-Fi connectivity which will enable the PMA400 to connect wirelessly to networks. This comes in addition to the unit's support for Ethernet, as well as USB 2.0 for exchanging data with other devices. Also supported is USB Host capabilities, which enables other USB mass storage peripherals such as digital cameras, hard drives and also keyboards to connect to the PMA400.

Capable of outputting video either to its integrated 3.5" LCD touch screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels or through composite video out, Archos claims the PMA400 can store up to either 120 hours of recorded video or the equivalent of 650 CDs of music.

In addition to its personal media viewer capabilities, the PMA400 also offers a wealth of PDA functions due to being powered by the Linux-based Qtopia platform. Applications include an e-mail client with support for POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols; an Internet browser by Opera; support for the Mophun gaming engine; and a full compliment of Personal Information Management applications. Also, the PMA400 will come with software to synchronize PIM information with Microsoft Outlook.

The Pocket Media Assistant PMA400 will among other things come bundled with a TV Cradle, remote control, USB 2.0 cable, power adapter and universal power plugs.

The PMA400 will be available in larger European markets from January 2005, and will sell in the $1,000 USD range including VAT.
