In addition to a 5 GB hard disk and minute size, Samsung's new YH-820 portable audio player also moonlights as a photo viewer.
Adding colour photo viewing capabilities to its extensive line-up of portable audio players, Samsung has announced the YH-820, a credit card-sized device with support for the JPEG format. Featuring a 1.6" LCD screen, Samsung promises the device will work seamlessly with most Digital Download Music services powered by Microsoft’s WMA and Janus Subscription DRM, in addition to supporting several other formats.
File formats supported by the YH-820 include not only Windows Media Audio and the secure variant of the Microsoft codec, but also Ogg Vorbis and MP3. An integrated MP3 encoder will let users transfer tracks directly to the device from a CD player, which also comes with ID3 tag update software and offers a voice recording function.

Adding a small twist to the concept of portable audio players, the YH-820 features a 1.6" CSTN colour screen which not only serves to display the user interface of the audio playback functions but also photos stored on the device. At a resolution of 128 x 96 pixels, however, prospective buyers are certain to debate the usefulness of the feature, which supports the JPEG format only.
At 50 x 88 x 14 mm, the YH-820 offers USB connectivity, 5 GB of internal storage and a Lithium Polymer battery. The player will come equipped with a carrying case, earphones, USB cable and an In-Line Encoding Wire, and is slated for availability in North America in January 2005 with an MSRP of $229.99 USD.
