At the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Motorola today unveiled three new colour flip phones. Leveraging CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution for Data Only) and EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) technologies, the new Motorola E815 and V635 represent upgrades to Motorola's existing portfolio of high-end clamshell handhelds.
Designed to further on-the-go multimedia functionality, the 1xEV-DO powered Motorola E815 will offer data transfer rates of up to 500 Kbps, and is expected to debut with either Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS or both, representing the two foremost mobile operators in the North American market offering CDMA2000 1xEV-DO networks.
According to Motorola, the E815 will come with video-on-demand support, enabling playback of content such as sports highlights and music videos. Other features will include support video and still image capturing courtesy of the integrated 1.3 Megapixel camera of the handset, as well as an MP3 player. Both of these functions draw on the integrated 40 MB of memory found in the E815, whilst a proprietary TransFlash memory expansion slot offers further memory for the imaging-hungry.
Also, the E815 will offer speaker independent name and digit dialing, which will be fully integrated with Bluetooth to allow for full hands-free operation.
The other high-end handset unveiled at CES is the V635, which is an improved version of the Motorola V600. Featuring a 1.2 Megapixel camera, the V635 offers the same video and still image capture functionality as the E815, and will also feature a TransFlash slot for memory expansion purposes. Furthermore, the V635, as is the case with the E815, will support Bluetooth connectivity.
Unlike the CDMA based E815, however, the V635 is a quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz handset with support for GPRS and EDGE as opposed to CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.
In related news, Motorola also announced the Motorola V186, a mid-range voice-centric handset featuring EDGE support. Similar to the two other models announced, the V186 also features a colour screen, but will sell at a lower price.
The Motorola E815, V635 and V186 are expected to be available in the first half of 2005, however Motorola did not disclose further information concerning the expected pricing of the handsets.
