Delivering on its August 2004 announcement to develop a version of its browser for Windows Mobile, Opera Software today released a technical preview of the Opera browser compatible with a range of smartphones based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone platform. The announcement follows a silent technical preview introduction on October 14, of which Opera claims 43,000 downloads to date.
Having gained a large following among users of Symbian OS based smartphones, the browser offers Opera's SSR (Small Screen Rendering) technology which reformats web pages constructed for desktop viewing to a format more legible on smartphone screen sizes. The version now made available to Windows Mobile users is based on version 7.60 of the Opera browser, sharing support for CSS2, DOM 2, JavaScript and other technologies with the desktop version of the browser.
